I like and often use the chat function of FaceBook that was incorporated as part of their new features in replacing the old FaceBook layout; the only thing that I don't like about the feature; is that it's not stable (imagine the frustration of finding out that your friends have somehow gotten "disconnected" when you're in the middle of a conversation) seeing how FaceBook and how browsers work, the solution would be to have the chat in a separate browser window.
How
do you enable chats in another browser window? Use the Pop-Out Chat feature. The picture right explains the
process. (I believe Microsoft Internet Explorer has the pop out chat enabled by default) Clicking on the link will have a new browser open up
exclusively for chat functions. The reason behind those so-called "disconnections" is because Internet browsers often refresh their content every time users click on a link or does anything that makes the browser display another page... so every time the browser loads a new page or reloads its contents, it also re-loads the code for the chat - creating the "disconnected" problem that most users encounter when using the chat function.
Another good reason why you should use the centralized chat window is when you're running more than one facebook page (example: FaceBook game applications) the chat function on each browser would often desynchronize the chat; making some conversations visible while on some windows, the messages on those windows don't make it through. At many cases, the chat will desync to the point that it will end up disabled... forcing you to refresh the window again until the chat button is activated once more.
So if you're using FaceBook chat often, try the Pop Out function and see how it goes!
