messenger_logos.jpgUsing a third party software like Outlook Express or even Mozilla's Thunderbird for free webmail accounts like Yahoo! Mail or Microsoft's Hotmail/Live! was not possible in the past unless you paid for their premium service (which features POP/SMTP access)... But coming across some posts online, there is a way to use these email programs with your free accounts! Below are the general configuration settings you'll need to set up with your email program (I'm assuming that you have knowledge in setting up your email account through the email program of your choice):
LiveHotmail/Live Account

POP Server: pop3.live.com
Incoming POP3 Server Port: 995
Require SSL?: Yes

SMTP Server: smtp.live.com
Outgoing SMTP Server Port: 587 (or 25 if there are problems)
SMTP Encryption Type: TLS
SMTP Requires Authentication: Yes (Use the same login settings as incoming server)

Logon: (your full email address) e.g. naithmyst@hotmail.com

And here are the settings for Yahoo! Mail

Yahoo LogoYahoo! Mail Account

POP Server: pop.mail.yahoo.com
Incoming POP3 Server Port: 995
Require SSL?: Yes

SMTP Server: smtp.mail.yahoo.com
Outgoing SMTP Server Port: 465
SMTP Encryption Type: SSL
SMTP Requires Authentication: Yes (Use the same login settings as incoming server)

Logon: (your Yahoo! email address) e.g. naithmyst@yahoo.com

Note:
I've read that the methods above for Yahoo! doesn't really work properly on free accounts subscribed to Yahoo! US. But there is a workaround below is the method to change your subscription to Yahoo! Asia so that you can enable POP3 and SMTP access with your yahoo free mail account. (So far to date, Asia, UK and Australia seems to enable POP/SMTP access with free mail accounts - not sure about the rest though)

  1. Login to your Yahoo! Mail with your web browser.
  2. Once you're logged in and viewing the interface, click on the My Account link which is close to your Logout link.

  3. Click on the Edit link in the Member Information category.

  4. Click on the Preferred Content link and choose Yahoo! Asia in the list of options.

  5. Once you're done selecting the Yahoo! Asia as the new content provider... save your settings and you should be able to have POP/SMTP access on your email program for your Yahoo! Account.
